Small RNAs Shed Some Light
نویسنده
چکیده
Small regulatory RNAs can act by pairing with their target messages, targeting themselves and the mRNA for degradation; Lenz et al. (this issue of Cell) now report that multiple small RNAs are essential regulators of the quorum-sensing systems of Vibrio species, including the regulation of virulence in V. cholerae.

Role of microRNAs in Arbovirus/Vector Interactions
The role of microRNAs (miRNAs) as small non-coding RNAs in regulation of gene expression has been recognized. They appear to be involved in regulation of a wide range of cellular pathways that affect several biological processes such as development, the immune system, survival, metabolism and host-pathogen interactions. Arthropod-borne viruses impose great economic and health risks around the w...
متن کاملPrediction of Ebolavirus Genomes Encoded MicroRNA- Like Small RNAs Using Bioinformatics Approaches
Recent findings revealed that certain viruses encoded microRNA-like small RNAs using the RNA interference machinery in the host cells. However, the function of these virusencoded microRNA-like small RNAs remained unclear, and whether these microRNAlike small RNAs were involved in the replication of the virus and viral infection was still disputable. In this chapter, the negative-sense RNA genom...
متن کاملRegulatory RNAs in the light of Drosophila genomics
Many aspects of gene regulation are mediated by RNA molecules. However, regulatory RNAs have remained elusive until very recently. At least three types of small regulatory RNAs have been characterized in Drosophila: microRNAs (miRNAs), piwi-interacting RNAs and endogenous siRNAs. A fourth class of regulatory RNAs includes known long non-coding RNAs such as roX1 or bxd. The initial sequencing of...
متن کاملGlobal analyses of endonucleolytic cleavage in mammals reveal expanded repertoires of cleavage-inducing small RNAs and their targets
In mammals, small RNAs are important players in post-transcriptional gene regulation. While their roles in mRNA destabilization and translational repression are well appreciated, their involvement in endonucleolytic cleavage of target RNAs is poorly understood. Very few microRNAs are known to guide RNA cleavage. Endogenous small interfering RNAs are expected to induce target cleavage, but their...
متن کاملThe small RNA world of plants.
RNA has many functions in addition to being a simple messenger between the genome and the proteome. Over two decades, several classes of small noncoding RNAs c. 21 nucleotides (nt) long have been uncovered in eukaryotic genomes, which appear to play a central role in diverse and fundamental processes. In plants, small RNA-based mechanisms are involved in genome stability, gene expression and de...
